Underdog Candles started with me — Lauren — standing in my kitchen, slightly annoyed (see photo for a semi-accurate depiction).

I loved candles. I did not love the constant headaches. Or the overpowering, fake-sweet scents. Or the fact that I was spending way too much money on candles that either burned weirdly or made my sinuses mad.

I wanted scents that were layered but gentle. Elevated but not try-hard. And more than anything, I wanted a way to refill & reuse the pile of empty candle jars I kept accumulating.

So I started making my own, and Underdog Candles was born.

Each candle is hand-poured in Maine using high-quality soy wax and thoughtfully blended fragrances. Why soy wax? Because it means cleaner burning — no toxins or pollutants that can be harmful or trigger allergies, and up to 50% longer burn time vs. paraffin candles. And while I was developing my candles and car diffusers, I made them refillable and said goobye to my drawer full of empty candle jars!

As a queer- and woman-owned business, Underdog Candles exists to celebrate everyday underdogs — the overlooked heroes, the quiet grinders, the people who deserve their flowers. We proudly donate 5% of proceeds to organizations that support LGBTQ+ communities, because supporting underdogs isn't just a tagline.

Somewhere along the way, this became bigger than *just* making candles, and we started sharing the process with you.

We opened our HQ / showroom / classroom in a historic mill building in Westbrook, Maine, and we started hosting hands-on candle making workshops and private events.
We love sharing the art and science behind fragrance blending, and we'd love to welcome you into our cozy studio for a candle making experience soon.
