Through her personal coming out journey, she saw how far we still have to go as a society in accepting and supporting the LGBTIQ+ community. Crafting candles that celebrate everyday underdogs was both a creative outlet and a way to connect with and support her community. ​ Underdog began as a line of pride-themed candles, launched during pride month in order to raise money for the LGBTQ+ Freedom Fund . ​ But we believe that pride month should be every month , so we're proud to extend our original mission into a long-term promise: We'll donate 5% of proceeds from all website purchases to organizations that support LGBTIQ+ causes, forever. Why soy wax? Because it means cleaner burning -- no toxins or pollutants that can be harmful or trigger allergies. Regular paraffin candles can contain petrol-carbon soot, and we're not about that. On top of that, our soy wax candles can burn up to 50% longer than paraffin candles. You can expect to receive your order in 2 - 10 business days: 1 - 5 days to hand-make your items, plus 1 - 5 business days for your order to arrive via UPS ground shipping (unless you've upgraded to faster shipping) I'm looking for gifts. Where should I start? Check out our Gift Ideas section. We've got something for everyone on your list! I live in Portland, Maine. Do I have to pay for shipping? No! We offer local delivery within a 2-mile radius of our Portland, Maine studio. You’ll save money on shipping costs, AND you’ll stop unnecessary packing & shipping materials from entering the environment. It’s a win win! All orders over $25 within our 2-mile delivery radius will qualify for free local delivery. Just select it as your delivery method at checkout, and you’ll get your order delivered to your door within 7 business days (but often sooner!) 😘 Do you have a store where I can shop IRL? We don't currently have a brick-and-mortar store, but our candles are sold in stores across the US, and we do pop-ups several times a year. Drop us a note at checkout to let us know your order is a gift (and include any applicable gift message). We're also happy to provide a free mini scent sample of your choice if you leave us a note in the "Note to Seller" box on the cart page. Can I customize my candle label? Of course! If you're looking for less than 10 candles, start shopping here! If you're looking for 10+ candles, head to our custom candle page for more info. What are your candles made of? Each candle we make is hand-poured with 100% soy wax, blended with essential oil-infused fragrances, and finished off with cotton wicks. We use soy wax because it means cleaner burning - no toxins or pollutants that can be harmful or trigger allergies. Regular paraffin candles can contain petrol-carbon soot, and we're not about that. On top of that, our soy wax candles can burn up to 50% longer than paraffin candles. Soy wax is beautifully imperfect, so each candle will slightly vary in consistency. Don't worry, this is how nature intended it! Is my Underdog Candles purchase eco-friendly? Yes! As an online business, we're very conscious of the impact our shipping has on the environment. Here are a few things we're doing to combat this: We use 100% upcycled or recyclable packaging materials. We use Greenwrap (the paper alternative to bubble wrap), recyclable packing fill, plus recyclable paper All of our candle jars and lids are reusable How does the Candle of the Month subscription work? When you sign up for Candle of the Month, you'll enjoy exclusive and top-selling scents, curated each month by our expert candle makers. Each month, your candle will be arrive hand-wrapped in our signature black tissue paper and canvas pouch. You can customize your subscription with the following options: GENRE: Because everyone has different preferences. Choose between fresh & light scents, or bold & complex scents. If you don't want to choose, we'll surprise you. CANDLE SIZE: Because one size doesn't fit all. Choose between our classic (7oz) and large (13oz) candles. Your subscription will continue to auto-renew each month until cancelled. Can I buy a Candle of the Month subscription as a gift? Yes -- it makes a fantastic gift! You can gift a Candle of the Month subscription here. Simply choose between a 3-month, 6-month and 12-month subscription, enter your billing details, and enter the gift recipient's mailing address. At the end of the subscription period you've selected, your subscription will automatically cancel, but we'll give the recipient the option to seamlessly continue by setting up their own separate subscription. Can I cancel my Candle of the Month subscription at any time? Yes, you're in control and can cancel your subscription at any time. To cancel, simply email us at subscriptions@underdogcandles.com. Note: Gift subscriptions will automatically cancel at the end of your selected subscription period (either 3 months, 6 months, or 12 months). What safety & care guidelines should I follow? Always review the caution label before using our products, and head to our care instructions page for more details. How can I maximize the burn time of my candle? Great news! You've already taken the first step by buying our 100% soy wax candles, which can burn up to 50% longer than candles made from the standard paraffin wax. We also recommend following our care instructions, but we've summarized for you here: Be sure to burn your candle for at least 1 hour each time. That way, the wax will melt all the way to the edges of the vessel, so your candle doesn't "tunnel." Tunneling is the worst, because not all the wax gets used and your candle won't live as long! Trim that wick! If it's longer than 1/4" at any time, it needs a haircut. When trimmed to the appropriate height, not only will your candles last longer, they’ll also burn better and be more fragrant in comparison to candle wicks that are not properly cared for.
